How we compare, in plain English

Comparison sites have been criticised for showing only partner plans and ranking by commission. Here is what we do differently, and where our limits are.

  1. 1

We rank by your numbers, never by who pays us

Plans are ordered by estimated annual cost for your home (or by feed-in rate if you ask for that). Commissions, clicks, AI and our own preferences cannot change the order.

  2. 2

We show every eligible plan we have, by default

There is no hidden "partner plans only" view. Filters only apply when you choose them.

  3. 3

We say what we cover, and what we don't

Today: 150 single-rate residential electricity plans from 13 retailers across 1,158 postcodes in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA and TAS. Not covered: gas, time-of-use or demand tariffs, WA, NT, and business customers. If we can't compare your postcode, we tell you.

  4. 4

    We show our working

Every result states the data date, the usage it is based on, and the formula. Savings are only shown against a baseline you gave us, never an invented one.

  5. 5

We say how we make money

SaveNest is free for you. We may earn a commission when you continue to a retailer through a link, and installers may pay us for solar enquiries. Links that earn us money are marked as sponsored.

  6. 6

We keep your data to what we need

No account is needed to compare. Bills you upload are stored privately and used to prepare your report. Plan Watch emails need your consent and stop when you reply STOP.

The formula

Estimated annual cost = yearly usage × usage rate + 365 × daily supply charge − solar exports × feed-in rate. Rates are cents per unit and treated as GST-inclusive. Plans named as estimates, wholesale, spot, demand or business tariffs are left out. The data is Australia's public Energy Made Easy plan reference data, snapshot 12 October 2026.

What the estimate does not include

Discounts, credits, fees, contract length, exit fees and eligibility rules vary by retailer and are not in the public data we use. Always read the retailer's Energy Price Fact Sheet before you sign up. Prices can change after our snapshot.

Government comparison sites

The government's Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare sites are free and non-commercial. We encourage you to check them too. SaveNest aims to make the same underlying data easier to understand and act on.
